Compliance Officer II

Job Overview

The Compliance Officer II leads in the identification and assessment of risks (Fair Lending, Responsible Banking, CRA) and executes procedures to evaluate the Bancorp's compliance with laws, regulations, and industry standards. This role develops and executes strategies for closing performance gaps, mostly working independently with minimal supervisory oversight, while collaborating across departmental teams.

The officer is accountable for risk management, open communication, escalation of concerns, and adherence to policies and procedures, ensuring actions consistently drive a positive customer experience within the Bank’s risk appetite.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Participate in analysis of lending policies, procedures, scoring systems, strategic priorities, market share data, trends, regulatory focuses, previous examination findings, and audit input.

• Conduct interviews and discussions with managers to understand lending processes, guidelines, and technology platforms.

• Analyze data by delivery channel, geography, product type, facility, or employee to identify risks.

• Develop and recommend scope or targets for reviews, corrective actions, and performance gap closure.

• Assess adequacy of business unit or affiliate corrective actions.

• Report findings to Senior Management, Legal, Audit, and Senior Operating Committees.

• Lead or participate in meetings with peers to maintain knowledge of emerging compliance issues and risks.

• Recommend solutions based on subject matter expertise for regulatory monitoring and change management.

• Recommend protocols for compliance testing and contribute updates to the compliance risk assessment.

• Support post-implementation validation based on risk ratings.

• Review council reports for use by the Regulatory Change Management Committee.

• Ensure compliance across consumer, commercial, wealth & asset management, testing & practices, financial crimes, and other applicable laws and regulations.

Job Requirements / Minimum Knowledge & Skills

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required.

• 5+ years of experience as an Officer or equivalent role.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

• Ability to conceptualize basic statistical analysis and manipulate data across multiple formats (spreadsheets, flat files, databases).

• Strong understanding of mortgage and consumer finance products.

• Advanced knowledge of Fifth Third Banking products, business lines, affiliate structures, and operations.

• Deep understanding of Federal Reserve and CFPB examination standards and regulatory issuances.

• Expertise in fair lending, responsible banking laws, CRA, Interagency Fair Lending Examination Procedures (IFLEP), and Interagency CRA Examination Procedures (IEP).

• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively upward, downward, and laterally.

• Demonstrates sound judgment and critical thinking in developing and recommending solutions.
